Ossining is a historic river town on the eastern bank of the Hudson's widest stretch — the Tappan Zee — about 30 miles north of Manhattan. Originally incorporated in 1813 as the Village of Sing Sing (named for the Sint Sinck people who inhabited this land), the village renamed itself Ossining in 1901 to distinguish itself from the notorious Sing Sing Prison that had operated here since 1826. What remained was a community with genuine character: rolling hills dropping steeply to the Hudson, a Main Street Historic District with 19th-century architectural gems including four historic churches and the remarkable Squire House, and a culturally diverse population that makes Ossining one of the more affordable and genuinely lived-in communities in Westchester County. The Old Croton Aqueduct runs through the village, and Ossining is the only place in New York where visitors can enter the Aqueduct itself through the historic Weir Chamber. John Cheever, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1979, lived in Ossining from 1961 until his death in 1982.
