Its name traces to 1695, when John Harrison, a Quaker from Flushing, Queens, negotiated the purchase of land from the local Siwanoy — as much as he could encircle on horseback in a day — and established the Quaker settlement that became known as Harrison's Purchase. That Quaker heritage is still evident in the Friends Meeting House founded in 1727, an accurate reconstruction of the original.
