Shrub Oak is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Yorktown in northern Westchester County, about 35 miles from Manhattan. Its name comes from the late 18th century, when the hamlet was known as Shrub Oak Plains for the shrub oak trees that thrived in its distinctive sandy glacial soil — one of the few places in all of Westchester County where the sandy substrate left by an ancient glacial lake created conditions for these low-growing oaks. The post office established here in 1829 is the oldest existing post office in Yorktown Township. The John C. Hart Memorial Library on Main Street, founded in 1920, anchors the old village center. Housing development began with Sunnyside Estates in 1927 and accelerated through the 1950s, when the hamlet became surrounded by postwar subdivisions of colonials, ranches, and split-levels that today define Shrub Oak's residential character.
