Serving the Historic Homes of Sloatsburg

Sloatsburg is a village of about 3,000 residents in the Town of Ramapo, at the far western edge of Rockland County where the Ramapo Mountains press against the border with Orange County. Its history is among the oldest and most layered of any community in the Lower Hudson Valley. The land — originally called Pothat by the Minsi band of the Leni Lenape, who had occupied it for over 5,000 years — was purchased by Dutch settler Wynant Van Gelder from the Minsi in 1738, passed to Isaac Van Deusen, and then given in 1763 to his son-in-law Stephen Sloat when he married Van Deusen's daughter Marritge. Stephen Sloat recognized the strategic value of the old Indian path through the Ramapo Pass, helped widen it into a wagon road to Albany, and turned his home into a tavern that became a regular stop on the stage route. During the American Revolution, the Ramapo Pass was a critical strategic point: the Sloat House served as headquarters for American troops stationed there, and George Washington visited in 1779. Five properties in Sloatsburg are listed on the National Register of Historic Places — the Sloat House, Sloat's Dam and Mill Pond (the only surviving early dam on this stretch of the Ramapo River, originally built in 1792), the Jacob Sloat House (Harmony Hall, an 1848 Greek Revival mansion), the Sloatsburg Cemetery, and another historic property. The village is incorporated as of 1929 and sits at the southern entrance to Harriman State Park — 47,000 acres of protected forest that shapes Sloatsburg's environment as directly as any natural feature in the project.

Meridian Contracting has served Sloatsburg and the surrounding Rockland County communities for more than 25 years. We're a family-owned business based in Yonkers. Sloatsburg's housing stock spans from 19th-century and early 20th-century homes near the historic village center to postwar colonials, ranches, and split-levels on the residential streets surrounding it, and newer construction on the village's outer parcels. The Ramapo River runs through the village. Harriman State Park presses against the village on three sides. The resulting exterior maintenance environment — Ramapo Mountain humidity, exceptional canopy debris from the surrounding forest, Ramapo River flood and moisture exposure on lower-lying properties — is the most distinctively forested and historically rich of any community in this project.
