Mohegan Lake is a 2.9-square-mile hamlet in the Town of Yorktown, centered on the private 103-acre Mohegan Lake that gave the community its name. The area began as a resort destination in the early 20th century, drawing New York City visitors for waterfront recreation and entertainment at lakeside hotels and clubs. By the 1950s and 1960s, summer bungalow colonies — Skyview Colony and Lakeview Colony among them — had taken root along Route 6 and the lakefront. Over time, many of those seasonal bungalows were winterized and converted to year-round homes, and postwar ranches and split-levels filled in the surrounding streets. The result is a housing stock with a notably varied age range: original bungalows from the 1940s and 1950s now serving as year-round homes, alongside postwar suburban construction, and some newer larger homes built as the community's demographic shifted.
Meridian Contracting has served Mohegan Lake and the surrounding northern Westchester area for more than 25 years. The hamlet's former bungalow stock presents specific maintenance challenges — structures originally built for seasonal occupancy that were later winterized and expanded without always getting the roofing, insulation, and drainage systems appropriate for year-round use. We're familiar with both this housing type and the standard postwar ranches and split-levels that make up the broader Mohegan Lake residential landscape.

Mohegan Lake’s former bungalow stock — structures built as seasonal summer homes in the 1940s through 1960s and later converted to year-round occupancy — presents maintenance challenges that don’t apply to standard postwar suburban construction. These homes were often built with lighter framing, minimal insulation, and roofing and drainage systems designed for warm-weather use rather than northern Westchester winters. When they were converted to year-round homes, winterization work varied widely in quality, leaving some with adequate updated systems and others with original seasonal-grade construction still doing the work of a year-round home.
The private Mohegan Lake and the hamlet’s proximity to the New Croton Reservoir and Camp Field Reservoir contribute to higher ambient moisture in lower-lying areas, which affects how quickly wood deteriorates in soffit and fascia systems and how actively moss and algae grow on shaded roof surfaces. The hamlet’s wooded character also means gutter debris loads are significant in fall, and downspout routing on lake-adjacent properties needs to account for drainage toward or away from the water.
