Ossining is a historic river town on the eastern bank of the Hudson's widest stretch — the Tappan Zee — about 30 miles north of Manhattan. Originally incorporated in 1813 as the Village of Sing Sing (named for the Sint Sinck people who inhabited this land), the village renamed itself Ossining in 1901 to distinguish itself from the notorious Sing Sing Prison that had operated here since 1826. What remained was a community with genuine character: rolling hills dropping steeply to the Hudson, a Main Street Historic District with 19th-century architectural gems including four historic churches and the remarkable Squire House, and a culturally diverse population that makes Ossining one of the more affordable and genuinely lived-in communities in Westchester County. The Old Croton Aqueduct runs through the village, and Ossining is the only place in New York where visitors can enter the Aqueduct itself through the historic Weir Chamber. John Cheever, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1979, lived in Ossining from 1961 until his death in 1982.
Meridian Contracting has served Ossining and the surrounding Hudson Valley communities for more than 25 years. We're a family-owned business based in Yonkers. Ossining's housing stock is genuinely varied: 19th-century Victorian and Italianate homes near the historic downtown, colonials and contemporaries throughout the hillside residential neighborhoods, co-ops and condos near the transit corridor, and the larger-lot properties of North Ossining and the Scarborough neighborhood to the south. Hudson River humidity and the village's pronounced topographic relief — steep terrain dropping from inland residential streets to the waterfront — shape exterior maintenance here in specific ways.

Leak repair, flashing, storm damage, inspections, and maintenance for Ossining's 19th-century Victorians, hillside colonials, and riverside properties.

Full replacements and new installations across Ossining's range of Victorian, colonial, and postwar homes on rolling Hudson Valley terrain.

Cleaning, installation, replacement, and guards for Ossining's wooded hillside neighborhoods and older downtown residential blocks.

Vinyl, wood, and Hardie siding for Ossining's diverse housing stock, from Victorian-era homes near the historic district to postwar colonials throughout the hillside neighborhoods.
Ossining’s topography is one of the most pronounced of any community in this project. The village drops steeply from its inland residential streets down to the Hudson River waterfront — grade changes of 100 feet or more over relatively short horizontal distances are common. This affects exterior work in specific ways: downspout routing on sloped lots needs to account for significant grade and natural drainage paths; equipment access on steep hillside properties requires planning that flat suburban lots never need; and lower-lying properties near the waterfront and the Sing Sing Kill experience higher ambient moisture and periodic flooding concerns that affect drainage system sizing and foundation protection.
Hudson River humidity is a real maintenance factor throughout Ossining. Properties along the waterfront and in low-lying areas near the river experience elevated ambient moisture year-round, which accelerates wood rot in soffit and fascia systems, promotes moss and algae growth on shaded roof surfaces, and keeps masonry chimneys consistently hydrated between freeze-thaw cycles. The village’s 19th-century and early 20th-century housing stock — Victorians, Italianate homes, and older colonials near the historic district — also presents specific maintenance demands at this age: masonry chimneys now well over 100 years old, complex original roofline geometry, and period building materials that need informed handling.

Yes — Ossining’s 19th-century homes along and near the Main Street Historic District are among the more historically involved projects we work on in the village, particularly for chimney repointing, period roofline flashing, and material-sensitive repairs.
Yes — river humidity and elevated moisture in lower-lying areas accelerate wood rot, chimney mortar deterioration, and moss growth on shaded roof surfaces faster than in drier, more elevated Westchester locations.
