Pocantico Hills is unlike any other community in Westchester County. An unincorporated hamlet of approximately 270 households in the Town of Mount Pleasant, it is almost entirely surrounded by the 1,800-acre Rockefeller State Park Preserve — land that was once part of the Rockefeller family's vast estate, which at its peak encompassed more than 3,400 acres and 60 buildings surrounding the hamlet. Kykuit, the 40-room stone mansion built by John D. Rockefeller beginning in 1893 and completed in its current classical revival Georgian form in 1913, overlooks the Hudson River from the highest point in the hamlet. The Union Church of Pocantico Hills, built by the Rockefeller family and featuring Henri Matisse's final stained glass work and nine windows by Marc Chagall, sits in the hamlet's center. Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture, on 80 acres donated by David Rockefeller, operates adjacent to the park preserve. The Pocantico River winds through the hamlet on its way to the Hudson. The name Pocantico comes from the Lenape — stream between two hills.
