Rye is Westchester County's smallest city by area and its most recently chartered — receiving its city charter in 1942 — but with a history that predates nearly everything else in the county. Founded in 1660 by English settlers, originally part of Connecticut (Rye briefly attempted to rejoin the Colony of Connecticut in 1697, in what became known as the Revolt of Rye), the city sits on the Long Island Sound in the southeastern corner of Westchester.
