Shrub Oak is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Yorktown in northern Westchester County, about 35 miles from Manhattan. Its name comes from the late 18th century, when the hamlet was known as Shrub Oak Plains for the shrub oak trees that thrived in its distinctive sandy glacial soil — one of the few places in all of Westchester County where the sandy substrate left by an ancient glacial lake created conditions for these low-growing oaks. The post office established here in 1829 is the oldest existing post office in Yorktown Township. The John C. Hart Memorial Library on Main Street, founded in 1920, anchors the old village center. Housing development began with Sunnyside Estates in 1927 and accelerated through the 1950s, when the hamlet became surrounded by postwar subdivisions of colonials, ranches, and split-levels that today define Shrub Oak's residential character. Turkey Mountain Nature Preserve and Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park are nearby. The hamlet borders the Croton Reservoir watershed lands that protect a significant portion of northern Yorktown from high-density development.
Meridian Contracting has served Shrub Oak and the surrounding northern Westchester communities for more than 25 years. We're a family-owned business based in Yonkers. Shrub Oak's housing stock is primarily the postwar single-family homes built during the hamlet's main development period from the 1940s through the 1970s — colonials, ranches, and split-levels now 50-80 years old, with roofing, siding, gutter, and chimney systems that are either at the end of their useful life or approaching their next major replacement cycle. The hamlet's wooded lot character and position in northern Westchester's rolling wooded terrain also create active gutter and roof maintenance demands from deciduous canopy debris and branch exposure.

Shrub Oak’s housing stock tells a consistent story: most of the hamlet’s single-family homes were built between the 1940s and 1970s, during the wave of postwar suburban development that spread through northern Yorktown along the routes opened by the Taconic State Parkway. At 50-80 years of age, colonials, ranches, and split-levels throughout the hamlet are at the stage where original exterior systems are due for comprehensive replacement — not just continued piecemeal patching. Roofing systems, original aluminum or early vinyl siding, first-generation gutter systems, and 50-70 year old brick chimneys are the most common subjects of these conversations.
Shrub Oak’s position in northern Westchester’s wooded, rolling terrain also creates active maintenance demands. Wooded residential lots with mature deciduous trees generate significant fall canopy debris that fills gutters, accumulates on roofs, and promotes faster moss growth on shaded surfaces than in more open suburban settings. The hamlet’s proximity to watershed protection lands and the Croton Reservoir area also contributes to a somewhat more moisture-active environment than in the drier, more open sections of lower Westchester — particularly near the lower-lying areas closer to the reservoir.
