Sparkill is a compact hamlet in the Town of Orangetown in southeastern Rockland County, about 3.5 miles south of the Mario Cuomo Bridge and less than 14 miles north of the George Washington Bridge. Its name is Dutch — 'kill' means creek, and Sparkill Creek, which flows through the hamlet and into the Hudson River, gave the place its identity before European settlement and its name after it. The hamlet was formerly known as Tappan Sloat ('sloat' being Dutch for ditch or cut passage, referring to the channel at the creek's marshy mouth). The Tappan band of the Lenape had lived here for thousands of years before Dutch Captain David Pietersz de Vries purchased land at the creek's mouth in 1640. Sparkill's post-colonial history includes the founding of Rockland Cemetery in 1847 by Eleazar Lord — the first president of the Erie Railroad — on the slopes of Mount Nebo; General John C. Frémont, the Pathfinder and explorer of the American West, is buried here, as is Henry Honychurch Gorringe, the naval engineer who brought Cleopatra's Needle from Alexandria, Egypt to Central Park. The Dominican Sisters of Sparkill established their convent in 1876 to serve the needy. St. Thomas Aquinas College anchors the hamlet's institutional life today. Stonehurst, the Gothic Revival 1867 home at 65 Rockland Road known as the Dederer House, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Meridian Contracting has served Sparkill and the surrounding Rockland County communities for more than 25 years. We're a family-owned business based in Yonkers — about 10 miles south along the Hudson. Sparkill's residential character is defined by narrow sidewalk-lined streets with Colonial Revival and early 20th-century homes on manicured lots shaded by established deciduous trees. The Hudson River sits immediately east, and Hudson River ambient humidity from the valley is the defining exterior maintenance condition in the hamlet — accelerating moss growth on shaded roof surfaces, promoting wood rot and paint failure faster than in drier inland communities, and keeping masonry chimney joints more consistently moist between freeze-thaw cycles.

Hudson River ambient humidity is the defining exterior maintenance factor in Sparkill. The river sits immediately east of the hamlet, and the Hudson Valley’s characteristic moist air keeps Sparkill’s exterior surfaces — roof shingles, wood siding, chimney masonry — more consistently wet between rain events than in drier inland communities. This accelerates moss and algae growth on shaded roof surfaces, promotes faster paint failure and wood rot on siding, and produces more mortar deterioration per freeze-thaw cycle on chimney masonry than comparable structures experience in more sheltered inland locations. Sparkill’s mature deciduous canopy on its tree-lined residential streets compounds this — shaded surfaces dry more slowly after rain, keeping the conditions active longer.
Sparkill’s housing dates from the early 20th century through more recent construction, with Colonial Revival homes being the most characteristic style. These homes — typically 80-120 years old — have reached or passed the age where original chimney flashing, roofing systems, and siding need comprehensive attention rather than continued piecemeal maintenance. The hamlet’s compact scale and sidewalk-lined streets also mean lot sizes are more modest than in many Rockland County communities, with drainage routing requiring attention to neighboring properties and Sparkill Creek’s proximity on lower-lying parcels near the creek corridor.
We provide full roof installation, replacement, repair, and maintenance across asphalt, metal, and architectural shingle materials, plus siding installation and repair, gutter and downspout services, soffit and fascia work, and chimney installation, repointing, cap, and crown repair.
